#BuyThemOut
The South Australian Apple and Pear Season Officially Begins – And Shoppers are Urged to #BuyThemOut
Adelaide Hills’ growers and producers are hoping a strong start to the apple and pear season will help them to get back on their feet after the devastating bushfires – but they need your help.
Pick a Local Pick SA! has partnered with the Apple and Pear Growers Association of South Australia and Adelaide Central Market to celebrate the South Australian apple and pear season, which will double as an awareness campaign for the growers and producers who were affected by the recent Adelaide Hills bush fires.
On Friday, March 13 at 11am, Themis Chryssidis from Sprout Cooking School will host a live demonstration, showing shoppers how they can prepare and serve some delicious recipes using fresh apples and pears grown right here in South Australia.
There will also be an apple bobbing competition – all to raise the awareness of those growers affected by the devastating bushfires – and to encourage support for these families simply by purchasing a kilogram bag of apples or pears from a Pick a Local, Pick SA! retailer. Find out more details here.
Market Fresh SA’s Pick a Local, Pick SA! Campaign Manager Penny Reidy said: “Adelaide Hills new season apples and pears are now in full supply.
“Consumers should be looking for the produce in their local Pick a Local, Pick SA! retailer to provide support to the industry.”
Pick a Local, Pick SA’s is encouraging South Australians to #BuyThemOut – a social media push to ramp up support for local SA businesses doing it tough after the fires.
“About 85 per cent of South Australia’s apples and 93 per cent of South Australia’s pears are grown from orchards in the Adelaide Hills,” Apple and Pear Association CEO Susie Green said.
“The past few years have been very challenging for apple and pear growers here with them achieving the one of the lowest farmgate produce values in the 2019-19 PIRSA report. However, our growers are resilient and are well into harvesting this year’s crops. We would love to see the community help us to #BuyThemOut.”
